The Ontario government has unveiled plans to extend the Hazel McCallion Line into downtown Brampton, marking a significant milestone for the region’s transit infrastructure. This project will involve detailed planning and design work for both the Brampton and Mississauga extensions of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. One of the most exciting features of this development is the planned underground tunnel that will run from the Brampton Gateway Terminal directly into the heart of downtown Brampton.
As part of the ongoing process, Metroplex, the provincial transit agency, will conduct studies to optimize both the construction process and the alignment of the LRT route. The aim is to ensure the LRT connects seamlessly with key transit hubs, such as the Brampton Innovation District GO Station.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown has expressed his enthusiasm, calling this move a transformative moment for the city. He emphasized the tremendous impact that the provincial government’s commitment to fund the LRT extension, including the tunneled section into downtown Brampton, will have on the city’s growth and development. Mayor Brown described the project as a bold step toward shaping Brampton’s future as a vibrant, modern city, highlighting the long-term benefits this infrastructure will bring.
Once completed, the 18-kilometre Hazel McCallion Line will consist of 19 stops, connecting two urban growth centers and providing access to a range of major transit systems. The LRT will integrate with GO Transit’s Milton and Lakeshore West lines, the Mississauga Transitway, Brampton Transit, ZUM, and Midway services. The Hazel McCallion Line will be operated in a dedicated lane, providing efficient and reliable transportation options for residents and commuters alike. This project is poised to enhance Brampton’s connectivity, contributing to its continued growth and success as a thriving urban hub.
