Ontario is considering the development of a major new nuclear facility near Port Hope.

Ontario is taking significant initial steps toward the development of a new nuclear power plant near Port Hope, Ontario, as part of the province’s long-term energy strategy. Energy Minister Stephen Lecce has confirmed that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is exploring the feasibility of building a new nuclear generating station in the area. This exploration follows positive feedback and engagement from both the local municipal government and the First Nation communities in the region.

In November, Minister Lecce made a formal request to OPG, asking the energy provider to engage with local municipalities and First Nations communities around three OPG-owned sites as potential locations for new power generation projects, including nuclear plants. The three sites under consideration are Wesley Ville, near Port Hope; Nanticoke, in Haldeman County; and Lambton, in St. Clair. As part of this process, OPG has been conducting consultations with various stakeholders to gauge interest and gather input from the communities in these areas.

Port Hope, along with the Williams Treaties First Nations, has expressed a willingness to continue discussions regarding the potential siting of the new nuclear facility. The community’s interest in ongoing dialogue indicates a readiness to work closely with OPG and the provincial government to assess the benefits and challenges of bringing a new nuclear plant to the area. While the Wesley Ville site near Port Hope is the most actively discussed, OPG has also indicated that it is exploring the feasibility of building new generation plants at its other two sites, Nanticoke and Lambton, as part of a broader energy strategy.

The next step in the process for OPG will involve the start of impact assessment activities at the Wesley Ville site later this year. These assessments will evaluate the potential environmental, social, and economic impacts of constructing and operating a new nuclear facility in the region. These studies are an essential part of the planning and permitting process, and they will help guide decisions about how to move forward with the proposed project.

OPG’s timeline for the development of the Wesley Ville nuclear plant suggests that, if the project proceeds, construction could begin in the 2030s, with the goal of obtaining the necessary construction and operational licenses by then. The facility would likely begin operations sometime in the 2040s, providing a long-term energy solution to meet Ontario’s growing electricity demands.

The proposed nuclear plant at the Wesley Ville site would have an estimated capacity of between 8,000 and 10,000 megawatts. This would make it significantly larger than any of Ontario’s current nuclear plants, such as those at Darlington and Pickering. Such a large facility would not only provide a substantial amount of power to meet the needs of the province but would also play a critical role in Ontario’s transition to a clean and reliable energy grid. The plant could serve as a key component of the province’s energy strategy, particularly as demand for electricity is expected to increase due to population growth and the transition to more sustainable, electrified industries.

In summary, Ontario’s exploration of a new nuclear generating station near Port Hope is a major step toward ensuring the province’s long-term energy security. The project, still in its early stages, will undergo thorough assessments, consultations, and planning over the coming years. If successful, it could provide Ontario with a powerful and sustainable energy source for decades to come.
