The Canadian government is committing $25 million to enhance port infrastructure in Atlantic Canada.

HALIFAX — The Government of Canada has announced a substantial investment of up to $25 million to support the Halifax Port Authority in enhancing its infrastructure and operations. This funding will be allocated to two key initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability, improving efficiency, and addressing supply chain challenges at the port.

The majority of the investment, up to $22.5 million, will be directed towards the Green Shipping Corridor Program. This initiative focuses on advancing the development of a green shipping corridor between Halifax and Hamburg, with the goal of making maritime transportation more environmentally friendly. The funds will be used to prepare the port for the reception of vessels powered by alternative fuels, ensuring it is equipped to handle and potentially refuel such ships. Additionally, a hydrogen production facility will be established to support the use of this alternative energy source.

The investment will also help electrify port equipment to reduce carbon emissions, further enhancing the port’s environmental sustainability. A portion of the funds will be used to acquire an electric rail locomotive and implement an incentive program designed to encourage the shift of freight traffic from trucks to rail. This shift aims to reduce road congestion and decrease the environmental impact of transporting goods over long distances.

In addition to the green initiatives, around $2.5 million will be allocated to the Ship to Shore Crane Infrastructure project, which falls under the National Trade Corridors Fund. This project is intended to alleviate congestion within the supply chain, expand terminal capacity, and enhance the port’s ability to service larger vessels more efficiently. By improving crane infrastructure, the project will also speed up the handling of cargo, ensuring that ships are loaded and unloaded quickly, thus increasing overall efficiency at the Port of Halifax.

These combined investments reflect the Canadian government’s commitment to modernizing port infrastructure, promoting green energy initiatives, and strengthening the country’s trade and supply chain capacity. The Halifax Port Authority is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing Canada’s international trade capabilities while also contributing to environmental sustainability efforts in the shipping industry.
