An $87.1 million investment has been revealed for the Terminal 16 and 17 project at the Port of Trois-Rivières.

TROIS-RIVIÈRES, QUE. — The Port of Trois-Rivières is set to receive significant financial backing, with Transport Canada investing $87.1 million in the Terminal 16 and 17 development project as part of the National Trade Corridors Fund.
This funding will be used to revamp Pier 17, construct a new Pier 16, and develop the surrounding terminals. Additionally, the investment will help strengthen the operations of two key port users, Alcoa and G3 Canada, by improving their facilities and operations, according to a release.
The overall cost of the Terminal 16 and 17 project will total $312 million, with a portion of this coming from the federal government. As part of the project, the Port of Trois-Rivières will work closely with Alcoa and G3 Canada to build the new piers and terminals. The companies will also contribute to the installation of state-of-the-art loading and unloading systems, designed to offer better energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and improved operational performance. This will include the installation of all-electric, enclosed loading and unloading equipment, ensuring a more sustainable and effective system for handling cargo, the release notes.
One of the significant upgrades will be the installation of the necessary infrastructure for future electrical connections, allowing vessels to connect to shore power while docked, reducing emissions from ships at berth. In addition to the improvements to the piers, the project will also involve the redevelopment of traffic lanes, optimizing the flow of goods through the port.
Earlier this year, Quebec-based construction firm Pomerleau was awarded the contract to carry out the project. Work has already begun, with the completion of the entire project expected by December 2026.
Once finished, the project will not only benefit the aluminum and agri-food industries but will also offer broader benefits by improving the port’s road and rail connections. These upgrades will help enhance the overall efficiency of the Port of Trois-Rivières, facilitating smoother transport of goods to and from the site, while supporting key sectors of the regional economy.
