CHARLOTTETOWN — A new funding agreement between the Government of Canada and the Province of Prince Edward Island will direct nearly $86.2 million toward housing-enabling infrastructure over the next decade. The funds, allocated through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF), are intended to accelerate the development of housing, promote higher-density projects, and address the increasing need for affordable housing in the region.
This funding will be available over the next 10 years, aiming to support a broad range of housing-related initiatives. The funds will be used to support both capital and planning projects that will focus on enhancing key infrastructure such as drinking water systems, wastewater treatment facilities, stormwater management, and solid waste infrastructure. These improvements are essential to facilitating new housing projects, including the rehabilitation and expansion of existing infrastructure to accommodate growing populations.
The funding will be distributed across several sectors, including provincial housing initiatives, municipal governments, Indigenous organizations, non-profits, and private-sector partners. These groups will be able to use the funds to expand housing development projects that meet the rising demand for affordable living spaces.
To help guide applicants and ensure the funds are distributed quickly and effectively, the provincial government will host a series of informational webinars throughout February. These sessions will provide detailed guidance on the application process, helping stakeholders navigate the funding process and secure the resources needed to move projects forward.
The deadline for submitting applications for the first round of funding is May 1. This deadline is crucial for communities and organizations looking to access the funds for housing infrastructure projects in the near future. The funding initiative is a significant step toward addressing housing shortages, improving infrastructure, and supporting sustainable growth in Prince Edward Island. By investing in housing-enabling infrastructure, the government aims to create long-term solutions to the housing challenges facing the province.
