The construction of the Confederation Drive Pedestrian Bridge in Smiths Falls, Ontario, is currently underway, introducing a visually striking and structurally advanced design. This innovative bridge, which will incorporate timber, steel, and stone elements, is being developed to highlight the concept of the “flow of forces” through its architectural features.
The project is being led by Structure Craft, serving as both the design-build contractor and the structural engineer of record. The new pedestrian bridge will replace the former Confederation Drive vehicle bridge, which was decommissioned in 2015. Once completed, it will span 50 meters across the historic Rideau Canal, serving as an essential active transportation link between Centennial Park and Veteran’s Memorial Park.
One of the most notable aspects of the bridge’s design is its integration of carefully selected materials and structural elements. It will feature gracefully tapered Alaskan Yellow Cedar glulam arches, supporting a distinctively curved metal roof that rises nearly nine meters above the bridge deck. Viewing platforms will be incorporated on both sides of the bridge, providing pedestrians with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
A key engineering consideration in the bridge’s construction is its clear span alignment, which eliminates the need for in-water construction. This approach helps preserve the integrity of the existing canal walls, as the abutments are cast directly behind them without any structural modifications. Additionally, the extended corrugated metal roof is designed with a subtle cross curvature, allowing rainwater to naturally drain sideways, thereby eliminating the need for traditional gutters.
The bridge deck itself is composed of pre-stressed timber panels, arranged with intentional gaps to enhance durability. These panels extend outward at the midspan viewing platforms, creating a cantilevered effect that enhances the overall aesthetic and functionality of the bridge.
Construction efforts commenced with the installation of concrete abutments in late fall, setting the foundation for the bridge’s remaining structural elements. The primary construction work will continue throughout the year until completion.
Several key organizations are contributing to the success of this ambitious project. Landscape architect firm Fotenn is overseeing the integration of the bridge into its surrounding environment, while Kilgour and Associates is managing environmental considerations. Thurber Engineering is providing geotechnical expertise to ensure the bridge’s long-term stability and resilience.
With its combination of innovative engineering, high-quality materials, and a design that seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings, the Confederation Drive Pedestrian Bridge is set to become a landmark structure in Smiths Falls, enhancing both connectivity and visual appeal within the community.
